How To Use This Site

This page is a collection of tools that make navigating the web easier with screen readers. On every page of this site there are links to all of the other pages in the footer. Using your links list, you can quickly switch between pages. Below I will describe each page, what the tool does, and how to use it.



Web Search: This page allows you to search the web using the lite version of Qwant.com. Lite versions of website have less images and layers then the regular version of websites. Type your terms into the edit box and press enter. Search results will appear in a format that is easier to navigate.


Textise: On this page you can enter a specific website address and press enter. The webpage will load in a text only format that is easier to read with a screen reader. When using this tool, make sure to include the domain (.com, .org, .net, ect.) but do not include https:// or www.


If you find a web page through web Search you can copy the web address and paste it into the textise page edit box, remove the https:// and the www. And press enter to access that page in a text only format.


Dictionary: Type a word you want defined into the dictionary edit box and press enter. This will take you to a text only version of the Oxford Dictionary definition of your searched word.


Thesaurus: Functions like the Dictionary page but provides a list of synonyms and related topics for your term.


Wikipedia: Type a term into the edit box and press enter to view a text only version of the wikipedia page related to your term.

News (Text Only): On this page you will find a links to accessible news feeds. Sites included are CNN, Christian Science Monitor, NPR, and Legible News.


Descriptive Audio: This page is a work in progress. On this page you will find two buttons. The “Where to Watch Descriptive Audio” will bring you to a page where you can view a lists of movies that offer descriptive audio and what platforms currently offer those movies. The “How to Watch Descriptive Audio” button will bring you to a page with buttons for specific platforms that offer Descriptive Audio. Click the platform you are using for a detailed walk-through on how to turn descriptive audio on and off on the platform you use.
